How to obtain a FENSA Certificate? Find out why it’s worth getting one.
What is a FENSA certificate?
It is a document that every property owner in the UK must obtain when replacing windows. It guarantees that both the windows and their installation are of proper quality.
In this case it is worth choosing casement, sash, or tilt & turn windows. These styles are indicated by the FENSA organisation as the most popular designs in the UK. Their approval should be a mere formality. If you want to learn more about windows types, read our article: casement windows vs tilt & turn windows.
FENSA also guarantees compliance with:
- British construction law
- thermal insulation requirements
- up-to-date documentation in the public office
Please remember that investors who replace windows and doors need this certificate. It is not required when installing windows in new buildings.
Who can issue such a certificate?
There are two ways to apply for a certificate:
- the first consists of an installation performed by a company accredited by FENSA
- the second option is to obtain confirmation of correct installation at the nearest Building Control Department
According to debesto.com, the easiest way to get a FENSA certificate is to have the installation carried out by a company that is an accredited FENSA fitter. Once the installation work is completed, the company responsible for the installation will confirm this work with FENSA.
This will allow you to easily find and order your certificate. You can do it via this link: https://forms.fensa.org.uk/
How do I get a FENSA certificate if the installation was performed by a company or person that is not listed by FENSA?
In the case where the installation was not performed by a FENSA-listed company, the easiest way to obtain a certificate is to ask for confirmation of installation compliance at the nearest Building Control Department.
A clerk will verify proper installation, tightness of the windows and their specifications. After receiving confirmation of the value of the windows in the form of an appropriate document, you will be able to obtain a FENSA certificate.
What is the cost of obtaining a certificate?
If the replacement has been reported to the public office and the installation was carried out by a FENSA-listed company, the cost of obtaining the certificate is only £25 (including VAT).
If the installation was performed by a company not listed by FENSA, the cost of obtaining this certificate is £ 180-260 for the official appraisement plus the cost of issuing the certificate, i.e. £25.
