How to quickly convert European windows sizes – metric to the Imperial system calculator
European window sizes – calculator
When you think about importing European windows, the first thing that comes to mind is what size windows you need. In Europe, window measurements are typically given in centimeters rather than inches, since it uses the metric system, not an Imperial one.
Thanks to our calculator, you can quickly convert the relevant parameters.
Why does Europe use the metric system?
The metric system was developed in France in the late 18th century and has since been adopted by many nations. Thus, metric system is very universal as it’s widely used around the world, except for instance, the United States. It allows for easy and fast comparison of window sizes across different manufacturers and countries.
The metric system is also deemed easier to use, because it is based on multiples of 10, which means that conversions between units are very simple, e.g. to convert centimeters to meters, you simply move the decimal point two places to the left.
In contrast, the Imperial system has different conversion factors for each unit, which can make conversions more complex and difficult to remember.
What is the standard size of a window in the US?
It mainly depends on a type of the window, for instance:
Type of the window | Average Widths | Average Heights |
Sash Single-hung | 24 inches (0.61 m) to 48 (1.22 m) inches | 36 inches (0.91 m) to 72 (1.83 m) inches |
Sash Double-hung | 24 inches (0.61 m) to 48 (1.22 m) inches | 36 inches (0.91 m) to 72 (1.83 m) inches |
Casement | 48 inches (1.22 m) to 96 (2.44 m) inches | 24 inches (0.61 m) to 72 (1.83 m) inches |
Sliding | 36 inches (0.91 m) to 84 (2.13 m) inches | 24 inches (0.61 m) to 60 (1.52 m) inches |
Bi-fold (depends on the number of panels) | 70 inches (1.78 m) to 96 (2.44 m) inches | 80 inches (2.03 m) to 96 (2.44 m) inches |
What is the standard estimated size of a window in Europe?
Type of the window | Average Widths | Average Heights |
Tilt and turn | 16 (0.4 m) to 55 (1.4 m) inches | 20 (0.5 m) to 98 (2.5 m) inches |
Sash | 36 (0.91 m) to 84 (2.13 m) inches | 24 (0.61 m) to 60 (1.52 m) inches |
Casement | 24 (0.6 m) to 55 (1.4 m) inches | 35 (0.9 m) to 71 (1.8 m) inches |
Sliding | 47 (1.2 m) to 118 (3 m) inches | 47 (1.2 m) to 94 (2.4 m) inches |
Bi-fold (depends on the number of panels) | 59 (1.5 m) to 142 (3.6 m) inches | 71 (1.8 m) to 106 (2.7 m) inches |
However, remember that European windows don’t have standard fixed sizes. They are made to the dimensions chosen by the customer, and the only thing that constrains the client is the limits of a given window profile.
