The Code contains minimum requirements for permits, architectural plan revisions, and inspections, however, local jurisdictions may adopt additional administrative requirements that are more stringent. Regional amendments are subject to the criteria outlined in the <em>Florida Statutes<\/em> section.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The FBC is based on the International Building Code (IBC), which in this case is modified to suit the specific needs of the state of Florida, such as hurricane protection guidelines for the Hurricane High-Velocity Zone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns are-vertically-aligned-top is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-1 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-vertically-aligned-top is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>The Florida Building Code consists of 9 main volumes:<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-vertically-aligned-top is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:5%\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-vertically-aligned-top is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"750\" height=\"750\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.debesto.com\/web\/assets\/2022\/11\/06090955\/florida-building-code-volumes.jpg\" alt=\"volumes of florida building code 2020\" class=\"wp-image-50443\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.debesto.com\/web\/assets\/2022\/11\/06090955\/florida-building-code-volumes.jpg 750w, https:\/\/cdn.debesto.com\/web\/assets\/2022\/11\/06090955\/florida-building-code-volumes-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/cdn.debesto.com\/web\/assets\/2022\/11\/06090955\/florida-building-code-volumes-150x150.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:40px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"windzones\"><strong>We divide Florida into 4 Wind Zones::<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Wind Zone 1: 130 mph \u2264 basic design wind speed &lt;140 mph<\/li><li>Wind Zone 2: 140 mph \u2264 basic design wind speed &lt;150 mph<\/li><li>Wind Zone 3: 150 mph \u2264 basic design wind speed \u2264 170 mph or 140 mph \u2264 basic design wind speed \u2264 170 mph at a distance greater than one mile from the coastline*&nbsp;<\/li><li>Wind Zone 4: basic design wind speed&gt; 170 mph<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:10px\">*the coastline shall be measured from the mean high water mark (a sign that shows the highest level reached by a body of water in a given location)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:40px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"HVHZ\">High-Velocity Hurricane Zones (HVHZ) <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>According to FBC&#8217;s criteria, HVHZ (High-Velocity Hurricane Zones) include the <strong>county of Miami-Dade<\/strong> and <strong>Broward<\/strong>. The state deemed those areas to be more vulnerable to severe weather conditions and hurricanes than other parts of Florida. In these regions, you must use products that have been properly tested and meet the HVHZ standards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:40px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:40px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:40px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"debris\">Wind-Borne Debris Regions<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>If the buildings do not belong directly to HVHZ but are located in the <strong>Risk Categories<\/strong> II, III or IV or <strong>are situated in Wind-Borne Debris Regions<\/strong>, i.e.:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>within one mile of the coastline measured from the mean high water mark<\/li><li>in areas where the basic design wind speed is 140 mph or greater<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>their glass openings<strong> must be additionally secured<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns are-vertically-aligned-top is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-2 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-vertically-aligned-top is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>If you want your windows to be protected from the external wind effects and meet the state&#8217;s requirements, you have to either <strong>install impact glass<\/strong> or <strong>cover the openings with hurricane shutters<\/strong> that can be installed permanently or be removable. Under state law, local jurisdictions must accept state-recognized products without the need for further testing and evaluation if the product conforms to the provided data. However, you have to pay attention to local city or county requirements, for instance, Miami-Dade county requires the manufacturer to provide a copy of the Notice of Acceptance** (issued by the county) to the installer, who must have it throughout the entire installation and assembly process, ready to be presented to the authority upon request.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>*Products <strong>needing approval <\/strong>include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>exterior doors<\/li><li>impact protection systems<\/li><li>shutters<\/li><li>skylights<\/li><li>windows<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:10px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-small-font-size\">**Miami-Date Notice of Acceptance is a local product approval that confirms the product meets the High-Velocity Hurricane Zone criteria; NOA can be used by a product manufacturer to apply for state product approval.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:10px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:25px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"zatwierdzenienaflorydzie\"><strong>Not sure if the product is approved in Florida and your county?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>For information on whether the building components are approved by the state of Florida, see the site of <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><a href=\"https:\/\/floridabuilding.org\/c\/default.aspx\">The Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation<\/a>.<\/span> This page allows users to <a href=\"https:\/\/floridabuilding.org\/pr\/pr_app_srch.aspx\">search for product approvals<\/a> by several variants, such as manufacturer, product category, and product name.
